We had a SUPER-nice day yesterday in the Los Feliz/Silver Lake area! I thought I'd share our activities, as it would make a great outing for local families.
We wanted to do something outdoorsy, but The Tween is not a big fan of our usual hikes (Placerita Canyon, Eaton Canyon, Topanga State Park)... So this time we opted for the Fern Dell area of Griffith Park. The base of this trail weaves along amidst a beautiful canopy of trees, ferns, and streams. (I'd love to know the history of Fern Dell; I found nothing online. If you keep going up the trail, it becomes more strenuous and ultimately leads up to the Observatory.) Dogs are allowed on-leash, so next time we'll definitely bring Kelsey!
After the stroll, we drove in toward Silver Lake for lunch. There are some wonderful eateries here, but we opted for Wendy's (again, looking to appease The Tween).
Next up, one of our favorite stores: WACKO! Mr. Siegel and I have frequented this place since before we were married, when it was located on Melrose. I ADORE this shop. Stop in and you'll encounter bacon-strip band-aids; Absinthe dental floss; tons of Dover clip-art books; wind-up toys; and some of the most unusual art and pop-culture books you can find under one roof. In the back corner lies La Luz de Jesus Gallery, often displaying super-rad art that you won't find anywhere else (altho not always kid-friendly, so scope it out before you drag Junior back there).
A GREAT daytrip for Angelenos. I hope you'll give it a go!

Today was a beautiful, 75-degree day in the SoCal, so the fam and I opted to head over the hill to Silver Lake, where there is very little silver to speak of, and no lake at all.
One of our favorite stops in this part of town is Wacko, a nutty book/gift/toy/tchotchke shop, with the often magnificent La Luz de Jesus art gallery in the back. Today we saw some extremely awesome stuff in the art gallery by a fellow named George Thomas. Ev procured some fine wax lips at the candy counter, while Dad selected a book for his collection.
After this foray, we bopped up the street to the Goodwill. This is a most excellent Goodwill. If I'd had more time, I easily could've found a ton of awesome tops! They have lots of stuff, beautifully organized.

Had a wonderful dinner last night in the Silver Lake, with the Logelins and Internet Sensation Lauren Farmer! The food and company were delightful, as was the wine provided by Miss Lauren (this restaurant lets you brown-bag it -- lacking a liquor license maybe? I dunno...) Thanks again, guys!The Boy *lurrrves* seeing Miss Maddy! (Heck... who DOESN'T?!) Plus, he got to imbibe a REAL Coca-Cola in the GLASS BOTTLE. The family and I decided we were overdue for an outing, so we opted to head over to the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles for some lunch, and spot of shopping at zany emporium Wacko.For lunch, we chose House of Pies -- one of those cool old coffee shops that you always mean to visit, but never quite get around to...It was a lovely day!
