Battle Of The Oldsters

Tonight's Phillies v. Padres game should be interesting, what with it being a matchup between old timers Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer. Moyer is one of the few active players who, at age 45, is actually older than the MadDog, who's only 42.

If Maddux wins tonight, he will be tied with Roger "I'm a Big Creepy Lunkhead" Clemens for 8th on the all-time wins list with #354.

Soooo... think good juju for the MadDog, will ya?

MadDog Stays in San Diggy

Greg Maddux is shown here, scratching his head at the Padres inability to secure a trade for him by Thursday's deadline. MadDog now appears doomed to spend the rest of the season, and possibly his career, with the worst team in the NL West.

Will Greg become an Emeritus Professor???

Greg "The Professor" Maddux, the greatest, coolest, most professional pitcher of all time (IMHO), is at a crossroads. The San Diego Padres don't want to pay the remainder of his (relatively) high salary; Greg doesn't want to be traded to BuFu Egypt (or the Yankees). Where will he go? Will someone on the west coast (the Dodgers? the Diamondbacks?) pick him up and allow him to rack up a few wins so he can pass Creepy Clemens on the all-time wins list before retiring?


I sure hope so. I don't want him to retire! It would be a crime! He's still so, so awesome!

Wiley Veteran v. Young Rookie

Tonight's Dodgers/Padres game features the young rookie pitcher, 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw, versus The Professor himself, wiley veteran Greg Maddux.

I can't wait!

MadDog gets another no-decision

So, my poor MadDog. This guy cannot get a win for nuthin'. He pitches his heart out game after game, and stays stuck at 350 wins (not a bad number to be "stuck" at, to be sure). The other night, against my Cubbies, he threw 69 PITCHES, people -- 47 of them, strikes -- and still gets a no-decision. I guess it's better than working that hard and having your team LOSE, which also happens to Greg alot this season.

I just really feel for him, that's all. He doesn't seem to care, which I guess is part of why I love him. (The humility, and the cheesy 'stash he used to sport -- see rookie baseball card at left.)

My only consolation the other night was that my Cubbies remain the team with THE BEST RECORD IN THE MAJORS. :-)

The Curse of the Billy Goat

I'm startin' to think maybe the Curse of the Billy Goat has been transferred to the San Diego Padres. (Payback for the 1984 NLCS, mayhaps? Too many ex-Cubs playing for the Padres? I dunno.) But look at their fall from grace! Last year, they were contenders! This year, not only are they at the rock-bottom of the NL West, they are the undisputed Worst Team In Baseball! This is bad news for my MadDog, who I'm sure would like to be racking up some wins, but has no run support from his team.

Then yesterday, Padres starter Chris Young gets hit in the face by a line drive. Minutes later, the starting catcher is knocked out when Albert Pujols slid into him. Sweet Odin - what next?!

Anyway, it makes me sad.

Padres v. Cubs

Welp, the Padres and the Cubs are playin' right now, and my beloved MadDog was pitching... up until the early part of the 5th inning, at which point he was removed after a flurry of hits (and runs) by the Cubs.

I *love* when the Cubbies win... but I hate when it's due to MadDog havin' a bad outing! Four earned runs for The Professor today... sigh
